Applicant Background Information.

Mission:
The Zambezi Valley Christian Mission works with the Tonga people in the spreading of the Gospel of our Lord and offering spiritual Counseling. The Mission also provides project like Biosand Water Filtration as a means of reaching out people with the transforming message of Christ. The Mission has Dongamuse BSF project which was established in 2015. It is a group of 30 with its committee members which runs daily affairs of the project.

Dongamuse BSF has the following objectives:

Objectives:

To provide safe and clean water to the people through Biosand filters.
To provide the BSF project training to the villagers.
To train people on how to construct and install filters.
To educate people on hygiene and sanitation.
To construct dams and drill borehole.

Project Partners: Jim Fitch, The Riverways Community, David Winterholler, Valley Christian Church, South Haven Christian Church.

Project Location: Dongamuse Village.

Project Background:
While I was still in the United States of America studying for Masters Degree in Spiritual Formation at George Fox Seminary University, I met Mr. David Winterholler who informed me about the Friendly Water for the World after I told him about the Cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe which killed about 5000 people. I was so inspired and motivated about the Biosand water filtration projects offered by the Friendly Water for the World to the underdeveloped countries. I requested Del Livingstone to come over to Zimbabwe and train people on Biosand filters. Del and Suzanne Livingstone came to Siadindi Village in June 2012 and trained 28 people to construct and install filters. They also taught us on hygiene and sanitation. 18 filters were molded of which 3 were donated to the Clinic, Pre-School and Primary School. The rest were used in the households. Currently about 60 filters have been constructed and installed.

We have started another Biosand Water Filtration project at Dongamuse village. This village has many sources of water which provide unsafe and unclean water for drinking. The villagers often complain of bilharzia, diarrhea and other water borne diseases. I was consulted by the villager if I could do the Biosand water filtration. After securing permission from the local authorities, I brought 3 trainers from Siadindi and trained a group of 30 people. We constructed 27 filters and were not installed because the sieve for sand was stolen by then.

Project Beneficiaries:
The beneficiaries of this project are the villagers of Dongamuse Community. Our goal is that each Clinic, School and household should have at least one filter to provide safe, clean and friendly water. Dongamuse community has 800 households., Clinics and Schools.

Project Trainers:
We have the best trainers among those who attended intensive training from Del and Suzanne Livingstone on BSF construction and installation and hygiene and sanitation. We may also ask the experts from overseas like Mr. and Mrs. Del for further training.

Total Budget Requirements:

Budget Required: $7.712
Budget provided by others: $2800

Project estimated-starting date: 10 May 2016
Project estimated-completion date: 30 November 2018.

Expected Outcomes:
Short-term:
Dongamuse village has 800 households including clinics and schools. From this project we are expecting to construct and install 800 filters so that each household, clinic and school should have one filter. We are also anticipating 5 molds at the end of the project. Currently, we have 5 molds. Furthermore, we expect to have 5 wheelbarrows and shovels by the completion of the project. Meanwhile, we borrow wheelbarrows and shovels from the community.

Long-term:
We are looking forward to embarking on other greater projects, that is, dam construction and borehole drilling. We would like to provide permanent and reliable sources of water to the communities. Some villages have shallow dams and boreholes which do not have enough water up to the next rainy season. If people will have dependable sources of water, they will have nutritious gardens and sell their produce to alleviate poverty.

The projected long-term community and health benefits are as follows. The community will have filters which will provide safe and clean water for domestic consumption for at least 35 years. The community will enjoy drinking safe and clean water. The community will also be free from water borne diseases like bilharzia, diarrhea and cholera because of using clean water and proper practice of hygiene and sanitation.

Follow-up:
The group has selected a committee to evaluate the effectiveness of the project. The committee encourages and motivates group members to harmoniously work together in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the group. They make a follow-up of the filters in the households, clinics and Schools for maintenance and giving knowledge to the users.

The tracking information will be obtained from the project manager. He will oversee the progress of the project and make monthly updates to all of our supporters.

Sustainability.
We plan to continue this work beyond the current project. Our mission is to provide safe and clean water to people through Biosand filters. Our business plan is sell the filters at an affordable price in order to sustain the project beyond the current funding.

Leadership Conference is
October 24th through 29th.
This will be the last conference for 2022.
