December Report
The grinding mill continues to be a real blessing to the villagers in Manseme community. The mill produces good quality of mealie-meal most desirable by people. It has become the most reliable grinding mill in the community. I am also proud of the worker for his faithfulness and good customer care to his customers. Two weeks behind I received a phone call from him informing me that the grinding mill had a breakdown. It actually needed welding. The biggest problem I encountered was electricity. The area has no electricity. I hired two big generators from the local villagers. After welding, I asked them how much they would charge me for hiring their generators. It became difficulty for them to charge me and I was wondering why they could not charge me. The other one said, “Please just give us any amount of money you like.” I handed them $20 so that they would share it between themselves. They refused the offer and I was wondering what was going on. Finally they said to me, “We know you don’t understand or know how important and helpful your grinding mill is in our community. It has brought great change in the lives of our local people.” They finally demanded $3 each. I came to a realization that we sometimes don’t realize how our small gifts or services affect the lives of others. We may under estimate the value of our gifts or services to others, yet they bring enormous change in their lives.
After maintaining the grinding mill I loaded one tonne of maize to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) in Lusulu and we had to proceed to Gwangwaliba to see brother Jack and John’s mother-in law. It was indeed a long journey. The journey turned out to be a boring one. As we travelled, we came to a high hill which was rocky and the truck failed to go up. It stopped the ignition and lost breaks. It moved fast backward until it stopped in the sand. We offloaded some of the bags and proceeded with the other half. We came back and collected the rest of the bags. We were able to proceed though we arrived at the GMB depot late. We sold our tonne of maize and then proceeded to Gwangwaliba. We made our visit short. As we left, it started to rain. We did not even travel for a kilometre before the truck got stuck in mud. We pushed the truck with the help of others until we succeeded. After we moved for about hundred metres it got stuck again. We were tired and bored. The rain continued to fall and it was getting late. We gave up and went to sleep. We continued our journey on the following day when it was dry.
I am sure you had a wonderful Christmas. I had a great one with my family. We had one family from Binga visiting us. It was good to be with them.
I wish you a prosperous New Year.
